Planning Approval For 2,000 New Homes At Canary Wharf

The developer CZWG has been granted full planning approval to build 1,972 new homes on the Isle of Dogs in east London. The new development will also encompass a large supermarket and a primary school, Architect’s Journal reports.

The East Ferry Road site will be developed with 10 residential buildings up to 32 storeys tall. Despite previous reservations about affordable housing provision and the right to light, the London borough’s Strategic Development Committee has approved the CZWG scheme with no further objections or concerns being raised.

Planners at Tower Hamlets Council said: ‘From a design perspective, it is considered that the proposed development responds positively to its context. The proposal has paid special attention to the areas of lower-rise built form close to northern and eastern boundaries, resulting in sensitive and neighbourly development.’

They added: ‘Officers have also worked closely with the applicant to ensure that impacts on Mudchute Park have been minimised and that development would step down sufficiently in relation to its surroundings.’

25% of homes in the new development will be classed as ‘affordable’, which equates to 370 homes. However, earlier proposals by Broadway Malyan had planned to make 31% of the homes affordable.

Last month, Tower Hamlets Council officially opened 115 new council home buildings, which comprise of flats over four to six storeys. The high-quality social housing has been shortlisted for the Inside Housing Development Awards 2021 in the Best affordable housing development (£20m+) category, Canary Wharf London reports.

The development includes 10 wheelchair adapted units, four disabled parking spaces, and a communal garden with secure storage for bicycles. It is part of the local Mayor’s plan to deliver 2,000 new council homes across the borough.
